Join us for an engaging professional development session featuring documentary filmmaker Liliane Calfee from DePaul University and veteran educator Laura Rosenberg that explores storytelling through documentary filmmaking, centered around the contest theme "On This Land."

In this session, you will:

• Explore the Contest Theme: Discover how "On This Land" can serve as a springboard for student storytelling. We’ll provide strategies to help students integrate historical and contemporary aspects of the theme into their narratives.

• Understand Story Structure: Learn about the essential elements of story structure for documentary shorts. Through analysis of award-winning films, you'll gain insights into effective storytelling techniques that can be applied to classroom projects.

• Enhance Visual Storytelling: Learn how to use visual techniques to elevate your students' storytelling. We’ll review successful documentary examples to uncover visual strategies that can make your students' projects more engaging and impactful.

• Integrate Filmmaking into Your Classroom: Receive practical advice on incorporating filmmaking into your lessons. Discover how the contest can be a tool for developing your students’ skills and creativity.

Facilitators:

Liliane Calfee is a documentary filmmaker and film instructor at DePaul University. She leads youth programs in collaboration with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), focusing on increasing film industry access for marginalized youth. Her award-winning programs pair CHA youth with experienced filmmakers and top graduate students from DePaul, resulting in a portfolio of short films recognized at prestigious festivals across the U.S.

Laura Rosenberg is a veteran educator with 12 years of experience teaching English, where she also served as a Curriculum Coordinator and coach. Since then, she has been a Senior Editor and contributing writer at 9to5Mac, a technology-focused publication with over 30 million readers a month. She now leads anti-bias education initiatives for schools and law enforcement to help combat implicit biases, bigotry, and extremism.
